Synesthesia is what helps us locate our body in space, to know where our legs or arms are, or in which direction we’re moving. But this idea may not be entirely accurate—each person has their own mental image of their body or the size their head occupies.

We are constantly measuring our own body in an unconscious way and using it as a reference to measure the world around us.

Touch ultimately shows us that we inhabit a three-dimensional world. We look at a photograph and believe we can recall the sticky humidity of a summer day, or the rough texture of sand on our feet. Touch completes our memory—without it, a mirror would mean nothing.
